Giving birth by C-section is an option recommended by an OB-GYN in certain circumstances. A cesarean delivery can be extremely taxing on the body, as it is essentially abdominal surgery. Typically, recovery time after a C-section is longer than it is for a vaginal birth. Here are some tips on taking care of yourself and speeding up the recovery process.

How to Recover From a C-Section

1. Rest

Like any major surgery, a C-section requires a significant amount of rest. That can be difficult, as you now have a newborn baby who may sleep just one or two hours at a time. Some age-old advice applies here: Sleep when the baby sleeps. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting. You may need to enlist your partner, family, friends and professional caregivers to help with chores, meals and other tasks.

2. Relieve Pain

Your OB-GYN will likely prescribe pain medication for your recovery. They may also recommend over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. It's important to follow their instructions and use these medications when you feel pain. Many people dismiss minor aches, wanting to "tough it out," but they can soon become more acute. Address it early, before the pain becomes debilitating.

3. Walk Regularly

As noted above, you should avoid strenuous activities, but that doesn't mean lying in bed all day. Most OB-GYNs encourage their C-section patients to go on easy, gentle walks to ward off blood clots, constipation and other issues. Walking is good physical exercise, a source of much-needed mental stimulation, a chance to socialize with other parents and a way to introduce your baby to the outside world.

4. Use a Pillow

After a C-section, your abdomen — and particularly the incision site — will be very sore for some time. Anything that engages those muscles, like coughing or laughing, will hurt. Holding a pillow against your stomach can provide support and reduce pain. A heating pad, belly bands and other compression garments may help, as well.
