Implantation bleeding is a completely normal part of pregnancy characterized by light bleeding or spotting. It occurs about 10 to 14 days after conception when the egg is safely and firmly attached to the lining of the uterus. It is the effect of mild bleeding that's caused by the physical implantation of your fertilized egg. To better understand why this happens and when to see your OB-GYN, consider the following guide.

Causes of Implantation Bleeding

After conception, the embryo becomes implanted within the inner walls of the uterus. Here is where your baby will continue to develop. The implantation itself can disrupt some of the uterine blood vessels, which is what leads to light bleeding. Menstruation, on the other hand, is caused by hormones triggering the body to shed the uterine lining in order to prepare for the next ovulation cycle. Implantation bleeding is usually more intense for the first pregnancy, but it should be distinguishable from your period.

Symptoms of Implantation Bleeding

The most common symptom of implantation bleeding is the visual presence of light pinkish/brownish bleeding or spotting. This tends to occur a little before the time of your expected period after conception, but your body isn't shedding the entire uterine wall. Other symptoms associated with implantation bleeding include light cramping, headaches, nausea, lower back pain, and breast tenderness. You may also experience mood swings. If you notice anything more intense, talk to your OB-GYN.

How Long Does Implantation Bleeding Last?

Implantation bleeding should not continue for very long. In fact, many women only experience it for a few hours and no longer than three full days. However, if the bleeding does not stop after this time or it is dark red or bright in color, it may not be implantation bleeding. Full flows could indicate a period or other complication, so don't hesitate to see your OB-GYN.
