With so many misconceptions about pregnancy prevention, it can be difficult to make an informed decision about family planning options. We’ve debunked five popular myths below, but you should always consult your doctor if you have further questions.

5 Myths About Contraception

1. Birth control is only for women

Fact: Various forms of contraception exist for men, such as condoms and vasectomies. Other options such as withdrawal, and the calendar method, involve both partners. Sexual partners should discuss family planning options in advance, and may benefit from multiple systems simultaneously.

2. Birth control causes weight gain

Fact: While weight gain can be a side effect of some hormonal birth control options, research shows that the majority of users do not experience these changes.

3. Birth control is 100% effective

Fact: No form of birth control is 100% effective, although some are more effective than others when used correctly, or combined with other methods.

4. You can't get pregnant while on your period

Fact: While it is less likely to get pregnant during your period, it is still possible. Sperm can survive in the body for up to five days, so if you have a short menstrual cycle or ovulate early, you could become pregnant.

5. Birth control is expensive

Fact: Many health insurance plans cover the cost of contraception, and there are clinics and organizations that offer low-cost or no-cost options.
