When you visit your OB-GYN, one of the health conditions they'll be watching for is polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. This condition is a hormonal disorder that can cause symptoms ranging from excess body and facial hair growth to infertility. It affects about one in 10 American women of reproductive age. Here’s what you need to know about it.

Causes of PCOS

The symptoms of PCOS come from an imbalance in your hormones, particularly the overproduction of androgens like testosterone. It's normal to produce a small amount of these hormones, especially at certain points in your menstrual cycle, but with PCOS, the amount is larger and fluctuates in unpredictable ways.

While the exact causes are unknown beyond genetics, other health conditions often show up alongside it, including sleep apnea, diabetes or insulin resistance, excess body weight, and high blood pressure. If you have one or more of these conditions, you are at greater risk of also having PCOS.

Symptoms of PCOS

OB-GYNIn addition to the above health conditions associated with the syndrome, your OB-GYN will look for symptoms like acne, body and facial hair, and baldness. You may experience irregular and difficult periods and struggle with infertility. Depression and anxiety are also common warning signs. If your gynecologist suspects PCOS, they'll recommend blood testing to check your hormone levels and confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

If you have PCOS, your OB-GYN will likely start with hormonal birth control to help regulate your periods and hormone levels. They may also prescribe a testosterone blocker like spironalactone. Finally, if there are signs your PCOS is accompanied by insulin resistance, you may be prescribed medication to help balance your blood sugar.
