Antique maps offer a glimpse into the past and provide unique decor for home offices, studies, and living rooms. However, there are a variety of decorative maps available, including reproductions and facsimiles that are not meant to dupe the buyer. If you are new to purchasing maps from days gone by, use this guide to make smart buying decisions.

A Guide to Purchasing Antique Maps

1. Familiarize Yourself With Reproduction Signs

Gain an understanding of what constitutes reproductions and facsimiles before you start visiting antique shops and art galleries. Reproductions sell for reasonably low prices and are typically larger or smaller than the originals.

Reproductions also appear on modern paper, unlike genuine antiques, which are made of rag paper and feature noticeable watermarks when you hold them up to the light. Facsimiles usually feature reproduction statements below their borders.

2. Examine the Map’s Condition

antique mapsCheck the antique map for water, dust, dirt, fingerprints, and mold stains, as well as frayed edges, holes, torn pieces, discoloration, and other damage that lowers its quality. Centerfold creases usually do not affect the value because the maps were originally sold that way, but other creases from improper handling can damage the map’s look and affect its worth.

Ask who made the map while you check it for damage. If the map was not created by one of the more famous cartographers from history, it helps if it was made by a known copper-plate engraver. See if the maker’s name is on the map as a sign of authenticity.

3. Look for Decorative Designs

Inspect the map for embellishments that enhance its beauty and value. Antique maps often include animal figures such as geese and mythical beasts from the ocean’s depths, as well as scenes with human figures and royal seals. The more ornate the map, the more it is usually worth, especially if it is several centuries old and in good condition.
