Roof leaks have a variety of causes, most of which revolve around the weather and maintenance frequency. Whether your roof has started leaking from a recent storm or any other cause, don’t ignore it. Use these tips to address the problem quickly and avoid serious water damage.

4 Tips for Handling a Leaking Roof

1. Contain Leak

Use large buckets or similar sized containers to contain the water wherever it is leaking from. Monitor the buckets and have replacements ready before removing them and using the collected water in garden beds and vegetable patches. If you see bubbles under paint or wallpaper, pierce the affected areas with a knife to drain the water and prevent it from accumulating within your walls and ceilings.

2. Move Furniture & Protect Flooring

Move furniture, rugs, and decor in the affected room to a safe location, such as a dry area of your house, the garage, or a storage unit. Hang saturated rugs on durable clotheslines. Additionally, protect carpet, hardwood floors, and other flooring with plastic to keep water from soaking in and promoting mold growth.

3. Schedule Roof Repair

roofCall your local roofing contractor as soon as possible to identify the leak’s source, such as broken or missing shingles, to provide a repair quote. Take pictures of the damage before the contractor arrives for insurance purposes and have the estimate on hand when you call your carrier.

4. Contact Insurance Agent

Discuss your roof’s condition with your insurance agent and what your homeowner’s insurance policy covers. While most policies do not cover flooding, they typically cover damage from hail and wind. If your roof was damaged due to vandalism, leak repairs should be covered as well.
