Dental implants are popular solutions to missing teeth. Unlike dentures, you may never need to replace them. Here’s a guide that will explain everything you need to know about this type of treatment to help you understand whether it’s right for you.

What Are Dental Implants?

An implant is an artificial tooth. Unlike dentures or bridges, it’s a permanent replacement for the entire tooth and root. It’s attached to a screw implanted in the jawbone, and has a post that sticks out from the gum line. A custom crown fits into that abutment.

As a result, the implant looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth. By fusing with the bone, it supports the jawbone structure to prevent bone loss. If you have one or only a few missing teeth, you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Most patients return to their normal schedules the following day. You will eat soft foods for a few weeks while the spot heals, and the implant and jawbone will naturally fuse. This process, called osseointegration, typically takes between four and six months.

The dentist will then place the abutment on top of the implant. They will take impressions of your mouth to create a custom crown for each implant. The crowns are placed in another appointment.

How Should You Care for Them?

You'll care for the implant as you would for a natural tooth. Once it has healed, you can return to your normal diet and habits. Brush twice a day and floss daily to maintain optimal oral hygiene.

You’ll only need to replace your implant if it becomes damaged from impact, so wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports. Visit your dentist every six months for checkups and professional cleaning.
