Flat Belt Drives

All belt drives are one of two types: friction drives or positive drives. Flat belts operate by applying friction between the inside surface of the belt and the surface of the pulleys. In this way, it transfers power from one pulley to the next. Flat belts are the oldest and most fundamental power transmission belt. They are extremely durable and feature sturdy, high-friction, rubberized material that can transmit as much as 150 horsepower per inch at speeds of more than 20,000 feet per minute.  

V-Belt Drives

V-belt drives, and Cogged V belts like flat belt drives, operate on friction. Their name derives from their characteristic V shape, which wedges itself into the groove of the pulley to improve friction force against the pulley's sidewalls. This improved friction force means that the belt need not be placed under extreme tension to prevent slipping, even at extremely high speeds. .  

Synchronous Drives

Synchronous drives, unlike flat and V-belt drives, are not friction-driven. Rather, they are an example of a "positive" drive. Synchronous belts have a series of toothed shapes that fit into corresponding grooves in the pulley, so they operate more like a chain than a friction belt. This improves load capacity, as there is very little chance the belt can slip.
