Types of Clutches Used in Motion Control

1. Electric Jaw Clutch

Electric jaw industrial clutches are a type of “positive” clutch, or one that transfers torque in a counterclockwise direction. Where positive drives are concerned, there’s no slip – that is, both inputting and outputting functions perform at the same speed no matter the conditions. One half of the clutch is attached permanently to the fixed shaft, while the other half is attached to the moving driven shaft.

When operated, this movable portion slides on the shaft to deliver power in either direction. They’re particularly useful in settings and applications where precision is important, such as printing products.

2. Fail-Safe Clutch

Another type of positive industrial clutch is the fail-safe device. This electric clutch features a coil that’s set within a protective housing. When driven, the clutch quickly releases built-up pressure to start the item in question. It’s used in a wide variety of products, including drill presses and steering wheels in some vehicles and boats.  

3. Torque Limiting Clutch

A torque limit clutch is a type of mechanical friction device that’s designed to disengage as soon as the device reaches the desired torque level, which is preset. This prevents overload from developing, a problem that could otherwise cause damage to other components, like gears, motors, and drives. It will also reduce excessive wear on machines that might otherwise lead to premature failure. For best results, this limiter is typically situated near the impact point to prevent aggressive force.
