How to Properly Align & Assemble Split Block Bearings
Split block bearings are necessary components of many heavy-duty industrial machines. They come in a variety of styles and increase efficiency. The bearing, which sits in a housing unit made of cast iron, ductile iron, or cast steel, spins within a single groove in a lube bath for maximum longevity. To achieve proper alignment and assembly of Split block Spherical bearings, consider the information in the guide that follows.
3 Steps for Mounting Split Block Bearings
1. Measure the Clearance
Mounted ball bearings tend to contract slightly during installation. Knowing their limits can prevent damage.
Determine the amount of space you have available by measuring the clearance within the bearing between the rollers and the outer ring. Since each bearing varies in size, refer to the instruction manual to assess the amount of clearance needed.
2. Mounting the Bearing
Lightly oil the shaft, and place one of the seals along the inside of the housing unit. Slide the adapter sleeve into place on the opposite side of the unit, and fit the bearing behind it. Next, place the retainer nut onto the shaft, and thread it onto the adapter. Use a spanner wrench and mallet to tighten it. Take care not to over-tighten it to ensure the nut holds secure while the bearing is in motion.
3. Attach the Lock Washer
Remove the nut, and slide the lock washer into place. The tang along the edge should fit perfectly into the adapter slot. Reattach the nut, and tighten it to hold the washer secure. Place the second seal along the back of the nut, and insert the fixer ring inside the bearing to keep it from moving. Grease the seals, and place the cap on top of the housing, pouring lubricant into the plughole at the top to coat the bearing.
