One of the most useful tools commercial locksmiths can offer businesses is a master key system. This grants owners and managers better control over their buildings and is carefully designed around a company's individual needs. This guide explains how it works and why it might be a good fit for your security needs.

What Is a Master Key System?

A master key system is based around locks that can be opened by one or more keys. When a commercial locksmith cuts these keys, they can choose whether they’ll open a single door, a group of doors, or all of the doors within the system. There can be multiple levels of keys within the hierarchy, including great grandmaster, grandmaster, master, and sub-master—also known as a change key. Each of these levels grants access to all the locks below it in the pyramid, but none of the locks above it.

How Does It Work?

A standard pin and tumbler lock has pairs of pins running down its length. When the right key is inserted, a thin gap is created through the center of the lock, allowing it to turn. In order for this to happen, the notches in the key have to push the lower pins upward to a precise point.

In a master key system, a third piece is added to one or more of the pin pairs. This is known as a master wafer or spacer, and it increases the ways a key can be shaped to create the necessary gap. While a change option might line the pins up along the top side of the spacer, a differently shaped master key can align them along the lower side and still unlock the door.

What Are Its Benefits?

Controlled Access

A janitor’s key might need to open most of the doors in the building, while some employees might only need entrance into their personal offices. A locksmith can create different master keys for each staff grouping, which is perfect for allowing people access to some rooms but not others. Tracking the keys assigned to employees lets business owners see which areas workers can enter and exit.

Convenience

Flipping through multiple keyrings to find the right match for the lock you need to open is frustrating. It can also get bulky and heavy if you need to keep several keys on you at all times while at work. A master key system keeps you from having to waste time hunting down the right version for your current needs.
