In addition to the privacy and security a fence provides, it is an ideal safety consideration for dog owners. However, some canines may escape from fencing that seems secure, either through climbing, squeezing under, or jumping over the barricade. Here are a few options to consider to help contain four-legged Houdinis of all sizes and breeds.

7 Dog-Proofing Options for Your Existing Fence

1. Shrubs or Hedges

Dense fenceshrubs or hedges along your property’s boundaries make your yard look nice and keep your dog away from the fence. Thicker vegetation creates a buffer that will deter most pets from jumping over or digging their way under.

2. Coyote Rollers

Install these roller bars at the top of your existing fence. Working like rolling pins, they are designed to prevent dogs from planting their paws at the top should they try to climb over. If you’re handy, you can make roller bars yourself with PVC pipes.

3. Lean-Ins

For high jumpers, add an extension to your fence that is tilted toward your property or perpendicular to the ground. You may also consider enclosing the area with plastic fencing to keep your pets from leapfrogging.

4. L-Footer

If you want to stop diggers, consider installing an L-footer, which is wire fencing that is bent perpendicularly and set against the fence base. You can either bury the L-footer underground or lay it on the surface, but you should cover it with rocks to hold it down.

5. Concrete Trenches

To stop persistent diggers effectively, make a concrete trench beneath your fencing. Aside from deterring dogs and practically any other animal from tunneling, these sturdy footers will secure your fence.

6. Rolls & Slats

If your dog often gets excited by visual stimuli outside your yard, consider tying rolls of bamboo or reeds, or adding privacy slats to your existing chain-link fence. Try using an opaque plastic construction fence to block your dog’s view.

7. Redundant Fences

You may also install a second, internal fence. This second barrier can help train your dogs to tolerate being enclosed and prevent them from digging under or jumping over the main border.
