As the weather gets warmer, your children will probably want to spend more time outside, both at home and at the day care center. While playing outside is good for your kids, their young skin is especially susceptible to sunburns. Here's what parents should know about preventing sunburn and potential long-term damage.

What Parents Should Know About Sunscreen and Sunburns

1. Sunscreen Isn’t Just for Sunny Days

Every parent should understand that sunburn can happen even on cloudy days. While clouds can reduce the amount of direct sunlight, they don't block all UV rays. Up to 80% of UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds, enough to cause sunburn on sensitive skin. To keep your children safe, remember to apply sunscreen even on cloudy days.

2. Choose the Right Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal, and choosing the right one is essential for optimal protection. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Also, make sure to check the ingredients and avoid any products that contain harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate.

3. Apply Sunscreen Properly

For optimal protection, sunscreen must be applied correctly and at regular intervals. Many people wait until their kids are ready to go outside before applying sunscreen, which may be too late. Be sure to apply sunscreen at least 15 to 20 minutes before your children go outside so it can fully absorb into the skin. Apply sunscreen liberally, making sure to cover all exposed skin, including ears, nose, lips, and feet. Don't forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming.

4. Don’t Rely on Sunscreen Alone

Sunscreen alone may not provide enough protection against harmful UV rays. If your children are going outside for extended periods, make sure they’re wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. It’s best to stay in the shade during peak sun hours, which are typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you’re leaving your children at a day care center during the brightest part of the day, ask what sun protection they provide.
