Buoyed by the lock downs of 2020, bicycle sales boomed and many people turned to their two-wheeled vehicles for exercise and transportation.  That meant more people riding bicycles on Ohio’s roadways and it's likely to continue into the warmer months of 2021.  Here are some helpful tips on how to safely navigate the roadway with people riding bicycles:

3 Feet When Passing – It’s the Law

Revised Code 4511.27(A)(1) states that when passing a person riding a bicycle “three feet or greater is considered a safe passing distance.”  This makes sense because it gives the person riding a bicycle enough space to safely maneuver around holes, cracks, debris, or other hazards on the road that may be imperceptible to people driving cars.

Sometimes It Is OK to Cross Double Yellow

Revised Code 4511.31(B) permits crossing over a double yellow if, and only if: (1) the bicycle is proceeding at a speed less than one-half of the speed limit, (2) you can pass without exceeding the speed limit, and (3) there is sufficient clear sight distance to complete a pass safely.  It's best to avoid passing on corners, turns, and blind crests of hills (either going up or down) and there is no reason to speed up when you do so.

Be Careful of the Right Hook

If you passed a person riding a bicycle and are about to make a right-hand turn, take a second to check your mirrors and look over your right should to ensure you have enough room and will not cut off any approaching riders.
