The 1890s Saw the Invention of Self-Loading Technology

According to Chuck Taylor, author of the Complete Book of Combat Handgunning, during the turn of the century, the United States military and navy were looking to switch out their current service weapons for more efficient and effective models of firearms. In the 1880s a self-loading rifle was designed by Hiram S. Maxim: its technology was soon used to create several models of self-loading pistols. In 1911, the self-loading Colt pistol, then known as the Model of 1911, was adopted by the U.S. military; it wasn’t until 1920 that it received the M1911 designation that it still holds. 

Plays Major Role in Military Campaigns

According to Robert Campbell in The Shooter's Guide to the 1911, when the U.S. military joined the allied force during World War I, nearly every soldier was issued an M1911. But due to the high demand for more service weapons, many different firearm manufacturers were tasked with their production, meaning Colt no longer held the monopoly on it. Several updates and improvements were made, and the M1911 was used in nearly every subsequent U.S. military campaign, including WWII, the Vietnam and Korean wars, and Operation Desert Storm.
