The Do's & Don'ts of Visiting a Gun Store for the First Time
Stepping into a gun store for the first time can be intimidating if you’re not familiar with the proper etiquette. Fortunately, most firearms store employees are happy to walk first-timers through the options as long as they follow a few simple rules. Below are some essential tips to follow and common mistakes to avoid if you’re visiting a gun shop for the first time.
Do:
Study the basics.
You don’t need to have the offerings of every gun manufacturer memorized, but having a basic knowledge of firearms will make conversing with the staff easier. Along with basic gun safety, you should also have a solid understanding of why you want to buy a gun. Knowing whether you’re interested in hunting, recreational target practice, or self-defense will allow the employees to direct you to weapons that fit your goals.
Choose a slow time.
As a first-time gun buyer, you’ll likely have a lot of questions. While owners and staff are there to help, it can be difficult to get the attention you need while the store is packed. Fortunately, most stores post their busiest hours on Google, so you can choose a slow period for a visit. For most shops, this will usually be on a weekday around lunch.
Don’t:
Make jokes.
A joke may be a good way to break the tension if you’re feeling nervous, but a gun store isn’t the best venue. Making a joke about anything that seems even remotely illegal can get you thrown out. In fact, the staff may have a duty to call the police, even if you think you were obviously joking.
Assume guns are unloaded.
Gun store staff will almost certainly check to make sure a gun is unloaded before handing it to you. However, good gun etiquette is to assume that every gun you handle is loaded and dangerous. Don’t dry-fire the trigger, and avoid pointing the gun at anyone in the store, even by accident.
