If you want to carry a firearm for protection, you’ll need to enroll in CCW classes. By securing your permit, you’re legally allowed to carry a concealed firearm outside and in certain public establishments. Here is a helpful guide to prepare for these courses and what you can expect during training.
How to Prepare
You first need to gather the correct documents and information to enroll in classes. You’ll need an Illinois I.D. or driver’s license and a head-and-shoulders electronic photograph, as well as proof of your last 10 years of residency. Applicants should also provide an official fingerprint scan.
When you book an appointment with a certified shooting range for your CCW classes, make sure to ask if the staff needs you to bring anything else or if they have a preferred payment method for the courses.
What to Expect During Classes
Illinois requires 16 hours of CCW firearms training by an Illinois State Police-approved instructor. On the first day of class, you’ll learn about permit requirements, state and federal CCW laws, and when you can and can’t carry a concealed firearm or use your firearm. This information is integral for understanding safe CCW practices, and courses usually last 8 hours.
The second day of class focuses on gun safety. Firearms instructors will teach you how to properly draw a concealed weapon from a holster and then put you through a live fire qualification test. You’re required to shoot at least 30 rounds from a semi-automatic pistol or revolver from 5 yards, 7 yards, and 10 yards. It’s best to bring your personal firearm for the test so you’re familiar with it.
