Going to a range is a fantastic way to enjoy time with friends or family, improve your shooting skills, or get comfortable with using a concealed-carry firearm. Every shooting range is different, so be sure to check your local facility's rules before your visit. However, most ranges have some variation of these basic rules to keep everyone safe.

3 Basic Shooting Range Safety Regulations

1. Don't Point at Just Anything

You should never point the muzzle of your weapon at a target that you do not want to shoot. You might also hear this guideline referred to as the 180-degree rule, which comes from the idea that a weapon should never leave the 180-degree half-sphere that extends to the left and right of you. The 180-degree rule especially applies to outdoor ranges where there are berms and backstops to the front and sides of each shooter.

2. No Drawing From Holsters

Most ranges don't allow shooters to draw weapons from holsters since there is always the possibility of a negligent discharge. Further, your gun isn't always pointed at the ground when it's in a holster. If you have a shoulder, small-of-the-back, or cross-draw holster, the weapon might be pointed in an unsafe direction. It's better to keep your weapon in a case when going to a range.

3. No Reloaded Ammunition

Ranges have regulations about the type of ammunition that shooters can use, as well. Homemade, hand-loaded, or remanufactured ammo usually isn't allowed because of the potential hazards of the ammo not functioning properly. Ammo could explode or penetrate the berms and backstops that are set up for your safety. Therefore, most ranges only allow you to use ammo that's fresh out of the box.
