4 Components of a Handgun

1. Cylinder

In revolvers, you will notice a cylinder behind the barrel and above the trigger. This component is where you will insert bullets or cartridges individually in separate chambers. 

However, the rotation will only occur if the gun is cocked, which moves the cylinder one degree to align it with the barrel. When you fire the weapon with a loaded chamber, it becomes empty. You'll need to cock it again to rotate the cylinder to another loaded chamber. 

2. Hammer

The hammer is the part of the firearm you'll use to cock a revolver. It resembles a short metal tab above the gun's handle and behind the cylinder. Pulling the hammer down using your thumb aligns one of the cylinder's chambers with the gun's barrel. As you pull the trigger, the hammer strikes either the cartridge primer or the firing pin, causing the detonation and bullet discharge. 

3. Magazine

Instead of using individual cartridges like a revolver, a semi-automatic handgun loads cartridges with a magazine. A magazine is a spring-loaded container that you pack with a predetermined number of bullets. It can be detachable from or fixed to the gun inside its grip. Because the cartridges are spring-loaded into the magazine, you can fire the firearm rapidly without cocking it after each shot. 

4. Trigger Guard

As a general gun safety rule, you should only have your finger on the trigger, the lever you squeeze to fire a gun, if you are ready to fire at a target. You can rest your finger on the trigger guard if you're holding a gun without firing. 

The trigger guard is a thin metal loop that surrounds the trigger. It prevents anyone from accidentally engaging the component and firing a shot. Though you can access the trigger despite the guard's presence, it does an excellent job of preventing anything from touching it without a deliberate motion.
