In Illinois, all gun owners must have a firearm owners identification card (FOID). FOIDs are issued by the state police and also apply to ownership and possession of ammunition. Determining FOID Eligibility

Before applying, take a look at the eligibility requirements listed on the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau site. People who fail to meet the criteria will not be able to legally own a gun in the state. For example, to be a lawful gun owner you must not be a convicted felon. You must also not be considered mentally or intellectually deficient or previously been a patient within a mental facility within the last five years. 

Other types of criminal charges may also prevent you from receiving a FOID. For example, people who’ve been convicted of domestic battery, assault, aggravated assault, and those who’ve violated a protection order will not receive the identification card. Applicants must also be legal citizens of the United States. 

What You Need to Apply

If you go through the above requirements and determine you are eligible to receive your FOID, make sure you have the right information to submit your application. First, you’ll need a valid driver’s license or state ID. If your current identification is not valid it must be updated prior to your application. Additionally, you’ll need a recent picture. Photos must have been takin in the last 30 days and must feature the applicant’s head and shoulders. 

There is a $10 filing fee associated with receiving your FOID, which can be paid using a credit card or electronic check. You’ll also need to renew your FOID once every ten years.
