If you are interested in heading to a shooting range in Illinois, it is good to know the regulations and laws regarding guns and attending such locations. It’s also beneficial to know who can go with you and what you can shoot. Below are a few facts to keep in mind.

FAQ About Illinois Shooting Ranges

What kind of guns can you shoot?

The answer depends on the rules of the shooting range. Many offer targets for rifles and pistols, and feature backstops to catch bullets. These locations usually prohibit airborne targets, which is why skeet, trap, and sporting clay ranges are different. There are also outdoor ranges set up for shotguns and aerial targets, but some indoor ranges allow for shotguns only if you use slugs and not pellet loads.

Can children go to the shooting range?

Minors are allowed with a parent or legal guardian. Anyone under 21 may shoot, but they must be with their parent or guardian all the time.

Some shooting ranges require that minors take safety courses and shooting classes before picking up a firearm on the range, even with an adult present. There are also observation areas where minors who aren’t shooting can stay safe.

Do you need a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card?

shooting rangeIllinois residents at least 18 years of age must have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card to rent or use long guns, and residents 21 years of age must have a FOID card for handguns, ammo, and the pistol range.

If you do not have a valid FOID card, you must be with someone who does or an instructor. If you do not live in Illinois but want to shoot at a range, FOID cards are not required, but you cannot accompany anyone at the range who also doesn’t have a valid FOID.

Do you have to have your own gun?

Shooting ranges usually have rental options that you can use. This is also an ideal way for you to test out firearms before purchasing. You will likely have to purchase the ammo you intend to use with your rental.
