Gun owners value revolvers for their low likelihood of malfunctioning, ability to dry fire, ease of concealment, and lack of magazine. If you have one in your collection, it's essential to know how to maintain, clean, and care for it, properly.
4 Maintenance Tips for Revolvers
1. Perform Regular Inspections
Revolvers have metal components that are prone to rust buildup from humidity and moisture exposure. Check operating surfaces for corrosion, including the cylinder, rear of the trigger, barrel bore, and underside of extractor star. Remove it using a brass brush, and apply oil to prevent future deposits.
2. Remove Lint
Lint in your pockets or on the inside of your holster could find its way into your revolver. Lint buildup behind the trigger or in the barrel could cause your gun to fail or misfire. Once a week, unload your revolver and use a clean toothbrush to remove lint from the trigger and barrel. Use a bore brush to clean any lint from the bores and chambers.
3. Use a Holster
Using a holster prevents items in your pockets from potentially lodging in the trigger and causing an accidental fire. A holster also prevents debris, sweat, and other potentially damaging substances from making direct contact with your firearm and its operating components
4. Oil The Barrel
Oil the barrel of your revolver after you clean it. Use a patch to apply a thin coat of synthetic lubricating oil inside the barrel of your gun. Doing so will prevent the barrel and bore from rusting and interfering with the proper firing mechanism.
