How Do Licenses Work?  

The Illinois State Police are responsible for issuing concealed carry licenses. If they feel a person applying for a firearm will be harmful to public safety, they can reject them. However, the applicant can have their case taken to the Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board, who will make the final decision, notifying the relevant parties by mail.

Additionally, to apply for a firearm in Illinois, you’ll need a Firearm Owners Identification card (FOID). The Firearm Owner's Identification Act went into place in 1968 to improve public safety and keep guns out of the hands of criminals.  

Illinois residents must have an FOID to buy or own a taser, ammunition, or firearm. Non-residents, on the other hand, aren’t required to get one. 

Additionally, you’ll need to take a 16-hour course to get a permit. During the training, you’ll be required to take coursework on weapon safety and pass a gun range test. 

Where Can You Bring a Gun?

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) allows those with a permit to carry a firearm on IDNR property, including the trails, biking paths, and designated hunting areas that they manage. However, one may not carry at IDNR playground areas, state museums, and dedicated nature preserves. 

While you can carry a handgun in most public spaces, there are certain locations you should never bring a weapon, including preschools, libraries, airports, zoos, amusement parks, jails, bars, and universities.
