Legal Guidelines

Illinois has instituted a number of conditions that applicants must meet before being granted a CCW permit. These include completing 16 hours of CCW classes taught by an Illinois State Police-approved instructor; a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card; and an Illinois driver's license or state-issued identification.

All applicants must also be at least 21 years old. Their records must show no convictions in the last five years involving crimes that included threats of physical force or violence to another person.

Training

CCW Class Requirements

These classes provide comprehensive education on gun safety and the details of Illinois' concealed carry laws. An instructor will teach you how to properly handle, store, and care for your firearm. You will also learn to master basic marksmanship skills.

CCW class participants must pass a live-fire qualification test, as well. To pass, you must be able to fire 30 rounds of ammunition from a revolver or a semiautomatic handgun, firing 10 rounds at five yards, 10 rounds at seven yards, and 10 rounds at 10 yards. You will also learn the laws surrounding concealed carrying and how they apply to you.

Length of Training

Most CCW classes entail two, 8-hour days of training. The first day covers the basics of safety and proper shooting, while the second day focuses on the laws and the qualification test. Honorably-discharged veterans, active-duty members, and reservists are credited 8 hours but are required to take the second 8-hour course.

While initial permit acquisition requires 16 hours of training, renewals require only 3 hours. All CCW permits expire and need to be renewed after five years.
