If you’re interested in learning to use firearms, safety is paramount. When handling this type of weapon, any negligence could cause harm to yourself and those around you. Use the following tips to learn how to properly handle a gun.

Do:

Assume the firearm is loaded when handling it.

Whether holding your own gun or one you didn’t load yourself, always handle it as if it’s fully loaded. This ensures you treat it with the utmost care. When you’re handed a firearm, safely check the chamber, magazine, and receiver for ammunition before using it.

If you’re unsure how to properly inspect the weapon, ask for a demonstration. This will prevent an accidental discharge while trying to figure out how it works.

Avoid the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.

firearmsPart of handling a firearm with care means keeping your finger off the trigger until the moment you’re ready to shoot at the target. Keep your finger straight and resting along the side of the gun’s frame, even when loading and unloading it. Do not try to squeeze the trigger when the safety is on.

Don’t:

Point the muzzle at something you don’t intend to shoot.

Always keep track of where the muzzle is pointing, this includes when you’re loading and unloading your gun. Do not idly point the muzzle in the direction of other people or structures that could be hit by accident.

If you’re taking a class, be mindful of the gun’s angle if the instructor and other classmates are nearby. Never dry-fire when pointing at an unsafe target.

Rely on the safety.

Firearms are mechanical, and every piece is fallible. The safety switch locks the trigger and striker-firing mechanism and is meant as a supplement, not a substitute, to proper handling.

The safety should be fully set in the “on” position until you’re ready to fire. If it’s half-way between the “on” and “off” positions, there is an increased chance of an accident occurring if the firearm is mishandled. Keeping your finger off the trigger will also prevent an accidental discharge if you thought the safety was in place when it wasn’t.
