As a gun owner in the state of Illinois, a concealed carry weapon (CCW) license allows you to keep a firearm on you and hidden from the view of others. The process of obtaining this permit is complex, and knowing where to begin can be challenging if you are applying for the first time. The following guide outlines the necessary steps for obtaining and renewing a CCW license.

How to Get a CCW License in Illinois

Illinois residents need to meet a set of requirements to get a CCW license. A person must be 21 years old and have or be eligible to receive a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card. They must not have any arrest warrants or misdemeanors within five years of the permit application.

GunsA 16-hour pistol safety class is also required. During this course, you will learn the basics of gun safety, laws, and care. After finishing the training, you must fill out the paperwork and provide a valid driver’s license, headshot, full set of fingerprints, and a $150 application fee. If the application is accepted, the license is valid for five years.

How to Renew a CCW License

The requirements for CCW license renewal in Illinois is relatively easy compared to first-time applications. While you will need to take another pistol safety course, this one only entails two hours of classroom instruction and one hour of range practice. The instructors will give you a refresher on how to take care of and safely use your firearm. Updated gun laws will also be reviewed.

Upon completion of the class, you will submit the course certification, headshot, application, and $150 fee. The renewal process should be started before your current CCW license expires, as approval can sometimes take up to 120 days.
