When a tooth is severely infected, there are a limited number of treatment options. A root canal treatment is one of the best ways to avoid removing the tooth entirely while relieving infection and pain. While this procedure has an intimidating reputation, it is actually much easier, more comfortable, and more beneficial than you might expect.

Root Canal Treatment FAQ

How does it work?

Root Canal TreatmentThe inside of your tooth is hollow and full of soft tissue and nerves called the pulp. When tooth pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can become painful and result in not only tooth loss, but the infection of other teeth around it. A root canal removes the infected tooth pulp to prevent further damage.

What is the process?

First, your dentist will thoroughly numb the area for your comfort. Then he will create a small opening in the chewing surface of the tooth. Using specialized tools, he will remove the infected tissue, including the long nerves which run along the root canals to the tips of the tooth roots. Once the inside spaces are cleaned, they will be filled to prevent bacteria from claiming the space, and a dental crown will be placed over the tooth to seal the opening.

Who needs a root canal?

If you have a cavity which reaches the tooth pulp or a different type of infection inside the tooth, a root canal is the treatment of choice. This type of infection will not heal on its own and can spread, so the only other option is usually to remove the tooth.

What should I do after treatment?

Thanks to advances in dental techniques, root canal treatment usually does not involve much discomfort during recovery—in fact, it provides relief from the pain of an infected tooth. You may need to take some over the counter medicine to relieve some discomfort. Also, if a dental crown is applied as a second procedure, you will need to protect the tooth in the meantime by avoiding hard and crunchy foods, chewing mostly on the other side, and brushing carefully.
