Quilting is a fantastic hobby that many people enjoy. Not only is it a relaxing creative outlet, but when you’re finished with your craft, you’ll have a lovely one-of-a-kind keepsake or a gift to give a loved one. If you’re new to quilts or sewing in general, below is a guide of quilting fundamentals to get you started.

Understanding the Quilting Process

Techniques

There are several quilting techniques, some of which are more complex than others. Two of the most basic techniques are patchwork and piecing and applique. Patchwork and piecing involve sewing different pieces of fabric together to form a geometric block. Applique involves sewing an upper layer onto a bottom layer of material.

Choosing a Pattern

sewingSelect simple patterns with large pieces to begin with. The larger the pieces, the quicker you’ll complete your project, since there are fewer pieces to sew.

Also, choose patterns with squares or rectangles. These are easier to sew than some shapes, such as triangles or circles, which require a bit more precision and are more challenging to fix. After you become used to various quilting techniques, you can tackle those tougher shapes to create a beautiful and intricate quilt. You can also choose a pattern made with pre-cut fabric pieces, which can save you time cutting material if you want to create a quick gift.

Choosing Fabric

Unless you’re working with a pre-cut fabric kit, you’ll need to select individual fabrics. Most fabric collections contain one or more of the following: small, medium, and large-scale prints, geometric or striped prints, and dots in matching colors. You can select from one collection or pick and choose from different ones.

If you’re choosing complementary or contrasting colors, rather than matching, consider using a color wheel. This way, you can gauge which colors will marry well together and which ones to avoid. Finally, an easy-to-sew material, such as 100% cotton, is typically best for first-time quilters because the fabric is thin, sturdy, and easy to work with. It won’t snag or rip, and if you make a mistake while sewing, the holes won’t show as prominently as other fabrics, such as silk.
