In the sunny and humid summer weather, allergens like pollen and mold thrive. People with allergies may experience uncomfortable symptoms like sneezing and watery or itchy eyes. Allergens can also trigger reactions in those with asthma. To stay comfortable this season, consult your allergist and try out these preventative measures.

How to Protect Yourself From Allergy Season

1. Keep Windows & Doors Closed

Although it’s tempting to keep windows and doors open on mild days, doing so may let in pollen grains and mold spores. Pollen will coat furnishings and get absorbed into fabrics, while mold spores may reproduce and cause an infestation. You’re better off turning on the fan or HVAC system for a cool breeze. Consider upgrading your HVAC filter to one that has a (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of 13; the higher the rating, the more effective the unit is at capturing particles of varying sizes so they don’t circulate through your home.

2. Wear Protective Clothing & Change Inside

If you have severe allergies and pollen or mold makes contact with your skin, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms. Whether going into the garden or for a walk in the woods, it’s a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants. If you’re worried about being too hot, choose a breathable fabric like linen, which allows airflow and doesn’t cling to your skin.

After re-entering the home, change your clothes as soon as possible. Otherwise, allergens might be transferred from clothing to furniture.

3. Monitor Allergen Counts

Once you've had an allergist confirm your specific allergies through testing, you can monitor the daily allergen counts in your area through an online pollen counter. If possible, minimize outdoor activities on days when counts are particularly high. For days when counts are high but you still need to go out, invest in a 3M respirator or N95 mask. Both are designed to filter out particles.
