Distracted driving is a leading cause of auto accidents. Texting, talking on the phone, playing with the radio, eating, and drowsiness are all distractions to avoid while behind the wheel. Here's how you can prevent distracted driving and the need for roadside assistance

How to Eliminate Distractions While Driving

1. Put Down the Phone

With the advent of smartphones, staying in touch with friends, family, and work has never been easier. This has translated to an astronomical uptick in phone usage while driving. While checking your phone may only take a few seconds, that's enough time to miss a potential road hazard that could result in an accident.

Phone usage isn't just limited to talking and texting. Selecting music, podcasts, or audio books while driving also presents a dangerous distraction. Try choosing a playlist or audio book before leaving so that you don't have to do it while on the road.

2. Avoid Eating While Driving

If you're running late and starving, you may be tempted to eat behind the wheel. It may seem like you can hold the food with one hand and steer with the other, but you should always have both hands on the wheel at all times. If you feel hungry while driving, pull over and find somewhere to eat.

3. Pull Over When Drowsy

Drowsiness can leave a driver less attentive, slow reaction time, and impact decision-making abilities. If you're feeling drowsy, it's best to pull off to the side of the road and catch a quick nap. If you don't feel like you're able to drive safely, you could have a passenger drive or call a friend and get a ride home with them.
