Area rugs can help define a space and add a splash of personality to a room, but it isn’t always easy to arrange furniture around these floor coverings. Fortunately, there are a few guidelines that can make the process simple. Here are three tips to keep in mind when arranging furniture around a rug.

Popular Furniture Arrangements Around Area Rugs

1. Surround the Perimeter in a Living Room

If you want to highlight the area rug you’ve added to a room, consider placing the rug in the center of the room, and surround the perimeter of it with furniture pieces. This arrangement is popular in living rooms, since the sofa can be placed on one of the long sides of the rug, and the loveseat can be placed alongside one of the shorter sides. To make the room easier to use, you can also place a coffee table or ottoman in front of the sofa in the center of the rug.

2. Centered in a Dining Room or Office

Area rugs can also be used to create a protective barrier between sliding furniture and the floor. For instance, many homeowners choose to center dining room furniture in the middle of a large area rug, creating a cozy dining area while protecting the floor. Office furniture can also be centered in the middle of a large area rug, creating a warm and welcoming appearance to a home office.

3. Two-Thirds Rule in the Bedroom

furnitureFortunately, the rug doesn’t have to be as large as your biggest furniture pieces to stand out in a room. If you have a larger furniture item, such as a bed, place the rug under the bottom two-thirds of it, so the rug is exposed at the foot of the bed and on both sides. This will leave room for your nightstands and will give you enough space to place your feet when you get in and out of bed.
