Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are a safety feature that helps drivers steer in emergency situations. It prevents the wheels from locking up and restores traction so can regain control. Understanding how ABS works and what to do when it activates can ensure a safe driving experience. Here are some tips on driving with ABS from brake service professionals.

Do:

Keep your foot on the brake.

When ABS activates, a dashboard light may illuminate, and the brake pedal may feel as if it’s vibrating. While your initial reaction may be to lift your foot off the brake, this will disengage ABS and could cause you to lose traction. Keep your foot on the brake and press down firmly.

Continue steering.

With your foot firmly on the brake, keep your hands on the wheel and steer to safety. Vehicles equipped with ABS have wheel sensors that detect tire locking and will begin to apply and release the brakes strategically to reduce the risk of skidding. By minimizing the likelihood of skidding, the system helps you control the wheel and effectively steer in your intended direction.

Don’t:

Drive aggressively.

While all cars and minivans manufactured after 2012 are equipped with ABS systems, be sure to take curves and turns slowly. You’ll also want to avoid stopping short, which can not only activate ABS, but may wear your brake pads quicker, leading you to need brake service sooner.

Panic when ABS activates.

ABS can cause pulsing in the brake pedal, along with unfamiliar mechanical noises. This is normal for ABS activation in slippery conditions or hazardous roadway circumstances, so don’t be alarmed. If you’re experiencing issues while braking during normal circumstances, however, it may be time for brake service.
