Guide to Travel Medicine & Vaccination Updates

Anchorage-Travel-MedicineWhile most international travel vaccines are readily available from your doctor, a recent announcement by Sanofi Pasteur, the manufacturer of the yellow fever vaccine YF-Vax, states that the vaccine will be unavailable from now until summer 2018 due to delays in production.

To allow travelers access to the vaccine, Sanofi Pasteur applied and received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to make another yellow fever vaccine available.  Sanofi Pasteur is able to select a limited number of qualified health care clinics such as Hillside Family Medicine LLC & Occupational Medicine to participate in an Extended Access Program (IND) for Stamaril, a yellow fever vaccine formula manufactured in France.

Due to the limited number of clinics participating in the IND, it is important to check with your provider to see if they have the vaccines needed for travel available. For travelers who do not know what shots they need or are concerned that their required treatments will not be available before their next trip, it is necessary to talk to your travel medicine team to determine availability for conditions like Yellow Fever, Rabies, and Typhoid Fever.

As always, it is beneficial to see a travel medicine physician well in advance of your trip to determine when you need to get vaccinated and how long you will need to wait before traveling safely.
