Cold and flu season is in full swing, which means plenty of school kids are experiencing running noses, sore throats, and mild fevers. Proper health care is more important than ever this time of year, but you can also take steps to keep your child from getting ill in the first place. Here are a few things parents can do to keep their kids healthy and happy.

3 Ways to Keep Your Child Healthy at School

1. Encourage Frequent Hand-Washing

Forgetting to wash your hands can increase the likelihood that germs from door knobs, toilet handles, and other unclean surfaces will spread to others you come in contact with. Luckily, hand-washing is an incredibly effective defense against germs, particularly at school. Proper hand-washing requires the use of soap and running water, so it's best to remind your kids to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds to remove germs.

If your child has trouble washing for the right amount of time, you can tell them to sing the Happy Birthday song twice to gauge how long they should wash their hands. It's also a good idea to pack a bottle of hand sanitizer in their backpacks, in case their hands are dirty but they're unable to access a restroom sink. Lastly, make sure your kids wash their hands before eating and after going to the bathroom.

2. Establish Healthy Habits at Home

Sugary snacks and processed foods lack nutritional value and fail to provide your children with the nutrients needed to fortify their immune systems. Luckily, boosting immune function can be as easy as establishing healthy habits for your family. Make sure your child has a nutritious diet including lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and whole grains.

A lack of sleep can lead to obesity, depression, and a minimized ability to focus and retain information. However, by setting and sticking to a bedtime, you can ensure your child is getting at least eight hours of sleep each night.

3. Schedule an Appointment for Flu Vaccination

Many kids catch colds and even the flu due to viruses thriving in the cold, dry weather conditions. That's what makes now a great time to schedule a flu vaccination for your child with your health care provider. Flu vaccines are an effective defense against illnesses your child can catch from a sick classmate.
