Often used interchangeably with the more general term impotence, erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common men’s health issue. It can describe anything from mild difficulty to a complete inability to get or sustain an erection. Men are often uncomfortable discussing this condition, which is why you may have many questions about it if you experience it. Learn more about ED in the guide below.

Common Questions About Erectile Dysfunction

What are the causes?

Although aging does not necessarily bring ED, it is a factor. Men over 50 are most likely to experience it, but it can happen to people as young as 30.

This is also more common in obese men, and can coexist with related conditions, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. Consumption of drugs and alcohol, extreme stress or trauma, and beta-blockers or blood pressure medications can also cause ED.

How is it diagnosed?

men's-healthYour primary men’s health provider may be able to diagnose the issue, or they might refer you to a specialist. To diagnose this, they will ask about your health history, including any issues related to blood flow, medication, psychological or lifestyle issues, and hormones.

What is the treatment?

Treatment will vary depending on what underlying causes are revealed during the diagnostic stage. For some men, adjusting medication, diet, or lifestyle may be enough.

In more severe cases, erectile dysfunction can be treated with medication, injections, or surgery. Surgery is usually only used after other methods have failed, and involves placing an implant into the penis to assist with achieving and maintaining an erection.

Who is a candidate for different treatment options?

Men who take nitrates or nitroglycerine for heart conditions should not take ED medications, as these can cause unsafe decreases in blood pressure.

For surgery, any man with severe ED may be a candidate, unless they are not fit for general anesthesia due to obesity or preexisting health conditions.
