A home’s gutters and leaders system is responsible for directing rainwater away from the structure to protect the roof, siding, and foundation from water damage. However, they must be maintained to work effectively. The following guide highlights some tips to ensure the system is in excellent shape for summer.

How to Ensure a Gutters & Leaders System Is Ready for Summer

1. Clear Loose Debris

Position your ladder near the drain outlet for the gutters and leaders. Put on work gloves and manually remove as much debris, including leaves, twigs, and pine needles as you can, working from the outer perimeter. You may wish to use a small garden trowel or another scooping tool to remove smaller detritus. It’s easier to collect debris when it’s damp, so consider doing so after rain or in the morning.

2. Flush the Gutters

After clearing loose debris, you can use a hose to flush out any remaining dirt. This time, work from the innermost section toward the drain outlet, as this direction is where the water will naturally flow. You may want to place a tarp on the roof before completing this task, as it can get messy. A pressure-washer on a low setting is best for this job, but you can use a regular garden hose, too. As you rinse, check that the water is flowing freely through the drain. If it isn’t, check for obstructions.

3. Check for Damage

While you’re cleaning the gutters and leaders, check that the sections fit properly and look for cracks or holes. Also, ensure the drain spout is directing water away from the structure correctly. If the system is leaking or the drain is not positioned correctly, you may need to contact a roofing professional to schedule repairs.
