Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that emerge at the very back of the mouth, usually during early adulthood. While they can form part of a healthy bite, problems with their eruption are also common, and many dentists recommend a tooth extraction to address the issue. Here’s what you need to know about this dental treatment and your options.

Questions About Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Answered

When is a wisdom tooth removed?

Wisdom teeth usually emerge between ages 17 and 25. They're generally removed if the wisdom tooth has a cavity or compromises the person's oral health. However, they may be removed earlier if problems develop inside the jaw before they erupt.

Does everyone need a wisdom tooth extraction?

Many people’s wisdom teeth emerge in healthy positions at the back of their jaws. As long as yours aren’t causing jaw pain, pressure on other teeth, or bite issues, you don’t need to remove them. However, if they become impacted—meaning they press on other teeth—or if they emerge at an inappropriate angle, they will need to be removed.

How does the extraction work?

If your wisdom teeth have already emerged, the dentist will apply an anesthetic to the area before extracting them. They may be cut into smaller sections to make them easier to remove.

If your wisdom teeth are still encased inside the jawbone and need to be removed, the dentist will make a small incision in the jaw to access them, then section and remove them as normal. The space in your jaw will heal over time naturally.

What are the benefits?

The jaw is often too small to accommodate these third molars. If they're allowed to grow in, they can push other teeth out of alignment or cause crowding in your mouth. Removing them protects your existing smile and helps keep teeth straight.

Also, molars are especially prone to cavities because of the natural pits and crevices in the chewing surface that can trap food. Removing these extra molars can reduce the risk of dental decay that could spread to other teeth.
