Pregnant women must focus on health care for the benefit of themselves and their babies. Proper dental care is equally important because pregnancy can affect your teeth and gums. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow to ensure women take proper care of their oral health for the duration of their pregnancies.

Do:

Floss on a frequent basis.

While flossing is essential for everyone, it’s especially important for pregnant women. Research shows that gum disease can actually increase the risk of serious complications and health issues. Pregnant women with gum disease are more likely to have a premature birth. Babies are also more likely to be born with a low birth weight when their mothers have gum disease. Flossing after every meal is a good way to prevent gum disease from occurring.

Know how to handle morning sickness.

Many women experience morning sickness during their pregnancies. While your natural inclination will be to brush immediately after vomiting—don't. Stomach acids soften tooth enamel, and brushing immediately after vomiting will increase the risk of tooth erosion. Instead, rinse with water and wait about 20 minutes before brushing to allow stomach acids to neutralize.

Don’t:

Neglect dental care issues.

dental careThere is no reason to skip dental care when pregnant. Regular checkups allow your dentist to identify any potential issues, as well as offer tips on your at-home oral habits. Additionally, dental X-rays are largely deemed safe during pregnancy, so don’t fret if your dentist recommends one during a visit.

Schedule major procedures.

While routine dental care is generally safe for pregnant women, more advanced procedures should be delayed until after the baby has arrived. This is especially true of elective cosmetic procedures. Even if the risk is minimal, it’s better to play it safe than sorry.
