Contrary to popular belief, a root canal is merely a type of filling. It requires more extraction and disinfection, but the goal is the same: remove the diseased area of the tooth and improve oral hygiene. This reduces the risk of the infection spreading to healthy areas in your mouth. But if you have braces, can this procedure still be done? Here's a short guide to getting a root canal when you have braces.

How Is a Root Canal Performed?

Before beginning a root canal, your dentist will apply local anesthesia to the surrounding area so you don't feel anything. Once numb, a small hole is made in the top of your tooth. The dentist uses this hole to access and remove the infected tissue of the tooth, also known as the pulp.

Once removed, the area is disinfected and filled with either a temporary or permanent filling, then covered by a dental-safe sealant.

How Do Braces Affect a Root Canal Procedure?

Braces are placed on the front of the tooth. This allows dentists to perform oral hygiene care and root canal work without any interference. Since no manipulation of the teeth occurs, getting a root canal with braces is exactly like getting a root canal without them.

Some dentists will remove certain types of braces before performing this procedure, but they can be replaced immediately after. When getting braces right after a root canal, your orthodontist may take a slower approach to shift your teeth to reduce unnecessary discomfort while the site heals.

Root Canal Aftercare Tips

Following a root canal procedure, your dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions. These will help you manage discomfort and improve your recovery. Your dentist will tell you to avoid pressure on the area to combat swelling and sensitivity and eat carefully to avoid aggravating teeth. As for cleaning, brush gently, and you can manage pain with over-the-counter medications and anti-inflammatory relief. Discuss approved medication use with your dentist after a root canal and follow up with any questions regarding your aftercare.
