A lush and green lawn can boost curb appeal and make outdoor areas more enjoyable. However, prior to grass seeding or sod installation, it's important to select a type of grass that grows well in Missouri's climate to keep your yard healthy and beautiful with minimal maintenance. Here are some grass types that typically thrive in the state.

Which Types of Grass Grow Best in Missouri?

1. Tall Fescue

Tall fescue has an emerald green color that typically lasts from early spring until the first frost. Its deep-growing roots help this species retain moisture, which makes it drought-tolerant during Missouri's hot summers. It is also resistant to fungal diseases such as summer patch and brown spot, which can harm other types of grass. Tall fescue grows best in full sun to partial shade and needs a little less than one inch of water per week to remain hydrated. Keep it mowed between two and three-and-a-half inches to prevent stress caused by trimming too short.

2. Zoysia

Zoysia is a light to medium green grass species that flourishes in Missouri's humid summers, though it is also resistant to drought since it requires less water than other grass types. Since it may take longer to grow dense and develop deep roots, schedule seeding or sodding in late spring or early summer. It needs full sun and one-half inch of water per week, and it should remain one to three inches tall.

3. Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass has a bluish-green hue and requires full sun along with about an inch of water weekly to maintain its rich color. Fertilizing it during summer can make it more resilient to diseases such as leaf spot, rust, and brown patch. Similar to tall fescue, it should stay between two and three-and-a-half inches tall.

4. Bermudagrass

Bermudagrass has a light green color and typically remains beautiful throughout summer since it flourishes in full sun and can quickly recover from heavy foot traffic. It is among the fastest-growing grass types, meaning it won't take long to grow lush and dense after seeding or installing sod. Apply about one-half inch of moisture weekly, and keep it mowed to a height of about one to three inches.
