Tongue scraping should be a regular part of your home dental care routine, alongside brushing and flossing. This practice uses a specialized tool to remove the extra debris, bacteria, and dead cells off the surface of your tongue. Doing it daily will provide numerous benefits.

How Do You Use a Tongue Scraper?

A tongue scraper is a rounded tool with a long handle and is made of plastic or metal. Stick out your tongue in front of your bathroom mirror, keeping it as flat as possible. Set the rounded end of the scraper at the back of your tongue, as far back as you can comfortably go without gagging.

Slowly pull the scraper forward to the front of your tongue, then use a tissue to remove anything on the scraper. Repeat until you've covered the entire surface with one or two scrapes. Wash the instrument with soap and water, then let it dry before putting it away.

What Are the Benefits?

Scraping removes the bacteria off your tongue. One study found that using the scraper twice a day significantly reduced the prevalence of Mutans streptococci and Lactobacilli bacteria, which are responsible for tooth decay. This means that this dental care will protect your mouth from gum disease and cavities.

Scraping also removes that unsightly white coating that tends to cover the tongue, leaving your tongue looking cleaner. This coating of dead cells and bacteria is also a significant factor in halitosis, so removing it will keep your breath fresher.
