Being able to enjoy all kinds of candy is why many children look forward to Halloween. For parents and caregivers, the popular holiday means being extra diligent about which treats their little ones are allowed to have. If you're planning to include candy during this festive day, children's dentists recommend the following selection guide to help protect teeth and gums.

4 Halloween Candy Selection Tips for Kids

1. Hard & Sticky

It may be tempting to allow kids to eat hard candy, but it can accidentally chip or even crack teeth if little ones bite down on the treat. If they decide to suck on the candy instead, the sugar can linger in the mouth, coat the teeth, and lead to cavities. Likewise, sticky confections such as taffy and gummy bears can also take longer for saliva to wash away the sugar.

If you find these treats in your kid’s bag, limit how much of the candy they eat per day. After they enjoy their ration, have them wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing their teeth so the acid doesn’t scrub away the enamel.

2. Sour

Some children relish the bitter taste of sour candy, but several varieties contain acidic ingredients that can break down the enamel on teeth and cause cavities and tooth decay. If your little one likes the sour flavor, consider sugar-free alternatives that contain natural fruit. If you’re hesitant to hand out this type of candy, see if your children would enjoy toys, like glow sticks or spider rings, instead.

3. Chocolate

This is the ideal candy choice for trick-or-treaters because the ingredients are more likely to wash off the teeth than other candy types, which means less chance of sugar getting trapped in teeth and gums. If you want to go for the best option, dark chocolate will typically have less sugar than milk chocolate. Still, children's dentists encourage brushing and flossing after eating this candy; if that’s not possible right away, have your kids drink water or milk in between.

4. Popcorn

Whether it's the buttery kind or coated in caramel and other candied layers, popcorn is another item to monitor. The kernels are notorious for getting lodged in between teeth or sticking to the surface, so it's especially important to brush and thoroughly floss after eating this popular Halloween treat.
