How to Deal With Chipped Teeth

1. Inspect the Mouth

Encourage your child to remain calm by keeping composed while you inspect their mouth for any chipped tooth pieces. You may also see some bleeding, so try to look for a clean, wet piece of cloth or gauze and apply it over the affected area. Either your child bites down to hold the cloth in place, or you may be the one to press firmly but gently. Bleeding typically stops within 10 minutes, and once it does, rinse out your child’s mouth.   

2. Call Your Dentist

Regardless of how bad the issue is, it is critical to have your child examined by a pediatric dentist as soon as possible. Even a minor chip can hide a fracture at the tooth root where bacteria can enter and cause an infection. What’s more, your child may feel pain if the nerve has been exposed. The earlier your child sees a dentist, the less likely there will be future dental problems. 

3. Keep the Chipped Fragment

If you can find the chipped-off part, place it in cold milk or saline to keep the root moist. You want to preserve the segment in case it can be reattached. However, dentists usually suggest a veneer or crown for older children to protect the tooth from further damage.

4. Provide Relief

If your child is in pain, you can give an over-the-counter medication that a doctor or pediatric dentist has recommended. Another option is to apply a cold compress or ice pack to your child’s face, especially if there are signs of swelling. To keep the broken tooth edge from cutting the inside of the mouth, place dental or paraffin wax over it.
