No one sets out to get a DUI, but it happens to around 1.5 million people annually. Fortunately, avoiding an arrest doesn't mean you have to give up on your night out. Instead, follow these tips to end the night safely.

How to Avoid a DUI

1. Set a Limit

In Alabama, the law states that a driver's blood alcohol concentration can't exceed .08%. However, as long as you can drive safely and stay under this limit, you can have a drink before heading home. With this strategy, try to set clear expectations with yourself from the start.

Set a maximum number of drinks for yourself based on your tolerance and how long you plan to be at the event. It takes around 60 minutes for the body to reduce a person's BAC by 0.015, or about one drink's worth, so give yourself an hour or two after the last drink before leaving. Also, ask the host to hold your keys until they're sure you're safe to drive.

2. Choose a Designated Driver

If you're attending the event with friends, see if someone will volunteer as a sober driver. Alternating who has this responsibility for each night out will ensure everyone has a chance to fully enjoy themselves.

However, you also need a backup in place in case trustworthy individuals are unavailable or the selected driver lets you down. Public transportation is an affordable method, but be sure to check service availability and plan the route ahead of time. Alternatively, consider rideshare and local taxi services.

3. Stay Local

One of the primary reasons people drive when they're intoxicated is because they feel they need to get home. Fortunately, this is easy to avoid. If the host is a close friend or relative, ask to stay at their house until the morning. Alternatively, stay with another guest who lives close by. For out-of-town events, book a room at a nearby hotel so you can safely walk back when the party's over.
