Before you embark on your next domestic flight, you will need to upgrade your current state-issued driver’s license to a REAL ID license or identification card by October 2020. Although it’s possible to board a plane by showing various documents, it’s easier to simply show your new enhanced ID. This federally implemented initiative was created to enhance security, minimize identity fraud, and potentially combat terrorist activity. Here’s what all Arkansas residents should know before going on vacation or another trip.

What You Need to Obtain a REAL ID in Arkansas

1. Proof of Legality

Don’t book your next vacation before you begin the proofing process. People born in the United States must bring legal documentation that provides proof of legality, such as a national passport, passport card, or a birth certificate.

Those born outside of the country may bring a valid foreign passport, a certificate of birth from abroad, or a form issued by the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

2. Proof of Identity

Other options include a school or professional ID card, your vehicle registration, a military ID, discharge papers from the Armed Forces, a health insurance card, and a pilot’s license.

Individuals born outside of the country must provide proof that includes their complete legal name, along with any necessary documents that connect the legal name with the given name at birth, like a marriage certificate. Applicants must also provide their social security number.

3. Proof of Residency

Finally, you must show at least two types of proof of residency in Arkansas to obtain a REAL ID that you can use for boarding flights. Valid documentation options include utility bills, financial statements, a paycheck, or a mortgage or rental agreement for a property located in the state. Anything that you supply must be dated within the last 60 days.

You may also provide a certified educational transcript or college enrollment paperwork dated within the past six months. Acceptable papers dated within a year include insurance policies for your home or vehicle, or a personal property tax invoice.
