If you’re having a professional contractor paint your interior, they will perform some of the immediate prep work, such as laying drop cloths and applying tape. However, you’re responsible for several other preparations, which you should have completed before your painters are scheduled to arrive. Following the advice in this guide will ensure your painters can start on time, helping your interior painting project run smoothly.

How to Prepare for Interior Painting

1. Move Furniture & Belongings Away From Walls

Your provider needs easy access to the walls to paint them, which means nothing can be leaning on or hanging from them. Remove all decorations and furniture to allow access and take down any hooks or nails from the walls. Ideally, you should get everything out of the room, but if that’s not practical, push the furniture to the center of the room, leaving at least a 3–5 foot walkway around the edge of the room.

2. Cover Remaining Items

Your provider should bring drop cloths for the floor, but they likely will not have materials to protect the furniture in the room from drips or spills. Cover the furniture with heavy canvas, a tarp, or plastic sheeting. Bedsheets offer a small amount of protection, but paint can seep through them, so they’re not the best choice.

3. Check Ventilation

Any room being painted needs air circulation to help the paint dry and to prevent fumes from building up. If there are windows in the room, open them. If there’s a ceiling fan, make sure it’s working. If the room does not have windows or a fan, look for a portable fan to help move air and open other windows throughout the house.
