Bathroom remodeling can completely transform this important room of your house for the better. However, a bathroom’s small size and lack of natural light can make it hard to figure out the best color scheme for your remodel. Here are a few tips that can help you make quality paint and material selections during a bathroom remodel and create an attractive, inviting space.

How to Choose Colors When Remodeling a Bathroom

1. Start With a Fixed Main Color

Your bathroom’s color scheme should start with a fixed main color that will take up most of the available space. Typically, the tiles on your floors and walls will serve this role since they are not easily changed. It is much easier to change the paint scheme than to retile the bathroom! Neutrals are generally the best choice for the main color because they work well with a wide range of accents.

2. Use the Color Wheel for Accents

The color wheel provides a great starting point for choosing your secondary and accent colors. Colors that are across from each other on the color wheel are complementary, while those next to each other are analogous. Both analogous and complementary colors can work well as part of your overall color scheme.

3. Follow the 60–30–10 Rule

The 60–30–10 rule has long been a staple of design and works well for bathroom remodeling projects. 60% of the space should be dedicated to the main color, 30% to a secondary color, and the remaining 10% to accents. Generally speaking, the accents should be limited to nonpermanent items, like towels, rugs, and soap dishes.
