You rely on your hearing aids for clear acuity to detect sounds and engage in conversations with confidence. In order to maintain audiology connection, however, it's important to keep the devices free of particles and other obstructions. Here is what you need to know about keeping your hearing aids clean and in good working condition.

3 Tips for Keeping Hearing Aids Clean

1. Use Proper Tools

Most cleaning kits should contain a wax removal brush, wax pick, vent cleaner, and soft cloths. Ensure that you have the proper tools to safely remove earwax from the hearing aid's receiver. Avoid using substitute utensils and cleaning fluids that are not made specifically for the devices. For example, alcohol, water, and disinfectant wipes can damage the wires, ports, and microphones. Instead, you should only use products that are clearly labeled for hearing aid cleaning.

2. Remove Debris

The debris removal steps will typically depend on the type of device you have. With in-the-ear (ITE) aids, use the wax removal brush to loosen up particles while holding the aid downward facing you. Use the wax pick to clear away any residual matter and finish by wiping the entire device with a clean, dry cloth. With behind-the-ear (BTE) aids, remove the earmold from its hook and clean it with the wax brush or soft cloth. For soft earmolds, clean them daily by wiping and then soaking in warm, soapy water at least once a week. Allow them to dry overnight. A bulb blower can be used to eliminate any remaining moisture from the tubing.

3. Schedule End-of-Day Cleanings

It's best to clean your hearing aids right before bedtime. This allows the devices enough time to air out and dry overnight so that they will be ready for use in the morning. Be sure to also open the battery compartment at night so that the area can also air out. Doing so will help extend the battery's life span as well. Always clean the battery compartment area with the wax brush before inserting new batteries.
