Like any device, hearing aids need maintenance and the occasional repair. Although regular cleaning will get you many years of reliable use, parts can wear down over time and require attention from an audiologist. Here are some common signs that a hearing aid needs fixing.

3 Signs That Hearing Aids Need Repair

1. Whistling Noise or Feedback

A high-pitched whistling sound or feedback can mean an incorrectly placed earpiece. First, try removing it and replacing it carefully. Your ear canals can also be blocked up by wax, so use a cleaner—not cotton swabs—to clear them out.

If there are still noises, there’s a chance the hearing aids no longer fit you properly. This can happen after several years of use or significant weight loss or gain. In this case, an audiologist can take a look and refit them as necessary. Unusual noises could signal a problem with the microphones or speakers as well.

2. Muffled Sound

If the sound from your hearing aids isn’t loud enough, no matter how high you turn the volume, inspect the tubing connecting the ear mold to the receiver. A buildup of wax or condensation can muffle or completely block sound. An audiologist will need to replace the tubing to fix this problem.

3. Physical Damage

Visible wear can cause serious problems with hearing aids and affect their function. This can happen when the earpieces fall from a tall height, if someone steps on them, if something hits the side of your head, or if you are involved in an accident.

Damage can also result from something more subtle, such as a small crack or bent wire going unnoticed and worsening over time. To catch any problems early, carefully examine your hearing aids for impairments each time you take them out for cleaning.
