Aggregates serve a range of functions. Gravel, sand, crushed stone, and rock provide a solid foundation for construction projects and beautify landscapes, among other applications. Knowing more about the uses of aggregates, outlined here, will make it easier to determine which materials to use for your industrial projects.

3 Industrial Uses for Aggregates

1. Backfilling Trenches

After utility pipes, septic drain field lines, and other equipment are placed in trenches, the tunnels are covered with aggregates and additional fill materials. Surrounding the fixtures with gravel or sand protects them and makes them easy to get to for maintenance and repairs later.

2. Laying Roadways & Highways

Because of their durability, stone aggregates are used in roadway and expressway construction. Applied in layers, different aggregates work together to strengthen the structural integrity of the entire installation. Roads can then withstand the weight of heavy loads without shifting or sinking into the ground. Crushed gravel makes up the foundations, the middle or base contains untreated gravel, and filler sand and fine gravel are often spread over the surface.

3. Constructing Buildings

Kamuela-Hawaii-gravelAggregate materials are used for both prefabricated and on-site building construction. Fine gravel and sand are mixed with water and Portland cement to make concrete. The size and shape of the aggregates impact the texture, pliability, sturdiness, durability, weight, and shrinkage properties of the concrete.

Whether you are working on one of the above projects or need aggregates for a different purpose, reach out to Edwin De Luz Trucking & Gravel. Since 1986, the Kamuela, HI-based company has carried high-quality gravel, black motor sand, concrete sand, and locally sourced products.
